Hey there! My name is Marisol Ballaro, and I am your own personal health coach and life buddy. I have always worked in service to others. A veteran of the service industry, I have a lifelong love of great food and helping people. For the past 20 years I have been immersed in the restaurant industry, working my way up to General Manager of both casual and ﬁne dining restaurants. I have a passion for health and ﬁtness and through personal goal setting such as running half marathons, experimenting with different dietary theories, and ﬁnding support through weight loss groups, I found my own path to wellness. My own personal transformation sparked a desire for more knowledge. In the last two years, I began to see my two worlds collide when patrons, coworkers and vendors were coming to me for advice about healthy eating. I felt a call to action to help them identify dieting myths and learn to eat clean and lose weight.
As a busy professional, I think it’s very important to have healthy options when you are unable to prepare your own meals. Although I was spending most of my time in a restaurant, I still packed a meal and healthy snacks and brought them to work. It took a mental shift to do this. I am a foodie after all so choosing my own healthy cooking over chef inspired dishes took some strength!
I was aware that many of our guests were dining with us once per day if not more. I had established relationships with many of our regulars and was constantly being asked questions about our menu/diet/food and health. As a result, I developed healthy menu options for our permanent menu as well as specials. As a matter of fact, I was working the pass one night and found myself packaging order after order of cheese fries. I remember feeling so disgusted by it. I haven’t eaten food like this in a long time and no matter how many healthy options are available on our menu, it’s the cheese fries and burgers that move the most. I felt like a fraud – handing over an order of nutritionally void food stuff I would never recommend and smiling as I said good bye. I was concerned about the health of my regulars and upset that I was somehow enabling by simply being at work. It was at that moment that I knew I had to do something else. I remember feeling so relieved and energized to ﬁnally understand my purpose! Eventually I became the go-to person for health and diet related questions and created individualized programs for some of my team members.
